Q: I’m nervous about adding my teenage daughter to my Havre SR22 policy because I remember how costly car insurance was for me as a teen, and my rates are already high. Can she get on her own car insurance policy instead of sending my rates up higher?

A: Your car insurance rates on your Havre SR22 policy will, indeed, rise when your daughter joins the named driver crowd, but that’s the only option you have unless she’s of the age where she can have her own car insurance policy. Most companies will only allow this with drivers who are 18 years old or over, and I don’t think you could make a special case in your situation. Until she turns eighteen, you either leave her off your Havre SR22 policy altogether, or you have her on there with you. Really, you only have one option, because leaving her off can get your insurance policy cancelled and claims denied for misinforming. Doesn’t matter if your daughter doesn’t touch the new car or rides her bicycle everywhere she goes; if she has a license and you leave her off your policy, you’ll get in trouble wih your company.

Instead of bothering about leaving her off, think about the discounts you can access with a teen on your Havre SR22 policy which will save you money. One of the biggest ones which will save you the most money is the good student discount, for if she is at least 16 and makes good grades in school.
